Innovator Spotlight #2 – Firefly Learning

Who are you, what do you do?

I’m Rachel Anderson, Research and Design Lead at Firefly Learning. We’re an EdTech company, making tools that save teachers time, help students learn more effectively and bring parents into the learning experience. I help us learn about what’s most important to the people in schools, make sure we are working on the things that will have the biggest impact on students’ learning, and guiding the teams to design really engaging solutions that help users achieve what they need to do.

Tell us about your organisation

We build education tools that simplify the most challenging aspects of teaching and learning, saving teachers valuable time, and helping parents to engage with their child’s progress, ensuring that every child gets the best chance of learning, whatever the circumstances. Our platform is trusted by schools in over 40 countries, and hundreds of thousands of students use our tools.

What is your organisation most proud of?

Always being there to support schools during the most challenging times during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our platform has always been suited to blended learning (a mix of in-school and remote learning) long before the school closures began, which meant our schools had a learning platform ready to go, with which they could continue to provide learning resources, set work, track progress, and communicate with their classes and parents in many of the same ways as they were doing before, minimising the disruption to student’s learning. When schools suddenly closed, we provided a lot of additional resources for schools too, and maintained a very high level of customer service.

Why are you in Hammersmith & Fulham?

Joe and Simon built the very first version of the product when they were students at St Pauls, just over the Hammersmith bridge. When the company started growing it seemed natural to get a workplace near to its origins. The good connections across London and out of the city to visit schools were also an attractive quality.

What opportunities are there to work with you?

We generally have a number of roles open, the current ones are always listed here and we’re always keen to build our relationships with new schools and EdTech providers. Get in touch if you’d like to learn more hi@fireflylearning.com

Where does your team hang out in H&F?

Our team is a big fan of the street food market in Lyric Square on Thursdays and Fridays, and ordering in takeaway from Poppy’s. After work, The Hop Poles, also on Lyric Square, is a firm favourite for hanging out, enjoying each others company and celebrating team achievements!

Tell us one funny/cool thing about you!

I generally cycle to work along the Thames path, enjoying the beautiful views. It’s a really calming way to start the morning, and I take lots of photos!
